What I focus on

AP Calculus AB & BC

I keep my tutoring focused on AP Calculus — with help tailored to whether a student is taking AB or BC.

AP Calculus AB

Help with AB

Steady, one-on-one support for students in AP Calculus AB — built around understanding, not memorized steps.

  • Keeping up with a fast-moving class
  • Understanding derivatives and integrals conceptually
  • Applications and free-response questions (FRQs)
  • AP exam preparation

AP Calculus BC

Help with BC

Support for the faster BC course — everything in AB, plus the additional BC material.

  • Everything in AB, plus the BC-only topics
  • Sequences and series
  • Parametric, polar, and vector topics
  • Managing BC’s faster pace
  • AP exam preparation

Why work with Tom

Experience, and a focus on understanding

  • About ten years of tutoringA decade of one-on-one work helping students make sense of mathematics.
  • High school through universityComfortable across the range, from high-school courses to college-level material.
  • Engineering Physics backgroundA degree built on using calculus as a working tool, not just a subject.
  • University tutoring experienceTutoring experience at Ohio State University and the University of Colorado.
  • Explanation over memorizationThe emphasis is always on why a method works and when to use it.
  • AP exam preparationComfortable preparing students for both the AB and BC exams.

Teaching philosophy

Understand it, don’t just memorize it

The goal is to understand why a method works — not to memorize a sequence of steps.

When an explanation doesn’t land, we try another one. Different students need different angles on the same idea, and a lot of my job is finding the angle that makes it click.

Calculators and AI can produce answers quickly. My job is to help students understand the mathematics underneath those answers. That understanding — being able to think through the mathematics yourself — is what holds up on a test and in the next course.

How it works

How online tutoring works

Get in touch

Send a message about the course or test, the goals, and where things feel difficult right now.

Talk about what the student needs

A short conversation about the student’s class, any upcoming tests, and the kind of help that would be most useful.

Arrange a lesson

We settle on a lesson time that works for the student’s schedule.

Meet online — and establish a regular schedule when useful

Lessons happen online, using screen sharing and a digital whiteboard so we can work through problems together in real time. Students who want ongoing support can set a regular weekly time when that makes sense.

About Tom

A little about me

Hi — I’m Tom. I’ve been tutoring mathematics for about ten years, working with students from high school through the university level, including tutoring experience at Ohio State University and the University of Colorado. My background is in Engineering Physics, so I’ve spent a long time using calculus as a tool, not only teaching it as a subject.

Right now my focus is AP Calculus AB and BC — helping students keep up with class, work through problems, and prepare for the AP exam. Mostly, I care about helping a student understand the mathematics well enough to rely on it.
